Whats the story behind the comment that a Porsche is just a VW on steroids?
Is anyone familiar with the way Porsche -VW- Audi have intermingled throughout the past. I know they have all been together on several projects including the early p-cars but I would like some details on ownership and part sharing.

Well without commenting on specifics...
To the unwashed, there are similarities 1. Rear engine, boxer motor, air cooled 2. Similar body shapes (at least when compared to the econoboxes) 3. German 4. etc... There has always been a certain amount of cooperation between Audi, VW, and Porsche. Since I don't have all the facts, lets just say that they share. (My Audi 4000 had a VW motor even)

Dr. Porsche designed the Beetle for Hitler. The idea was to make a small inexpensive car that everyone could afford.
Having owned two VW Beetles and a Ghia convertible in high school I can attest that the sensations are amazingly similar. However, the pedal on the right works much better in my 911. Here's the complete story |

I believe that VW was the first here and Porsche and Audi
were intially imported under the VW umbrella thus creating the VW/AUDI/Porsche dealerships that U see today. Also VW Porsche and Audi still share platforms and projects today... Example: 914 body built in the ghia factory Audi A4 and Passat same platform Porsche SUV (to be) and VW SUV same platform.... I am sure there are others......
