Porsche 930 wont start please help!

i have a 1978 porsche 930, recently i was driving on the freeway and the car turned off on me, i pulled over and tried to start it and white smoke and the smell of burning wires came from my stater area.

i took it in to my shop the wire that goes from the starter to the engine bay was melted i replaced and the car started right up, i turned it off then tried to fire it up again and its as if the car has no battery, i got a new battery connected it and same thing happened, so i tried giving it a jump. still barely turned. i checked the starter and it was super warm. is my starter bad or do i have a short?
