Did I miss something, or have older Porsches skyrocketed in value?

I have not posted in awhile, but has anyone else noticed that almost all of the air cooled 911s are increasing in value fairly rapidly? I was thinking that it was maybe just wishful thinking on my part as an owner of a 80' SC, but a clean SC seems to have increased in value by nearly $5k in the past 18 months.

Am I alone here, or have others noticed it too?

That is good nes and Bad News! The good is our cars are worth more but the bad is used parts prices will go up and insurance rates will also increase!

I haven't noticed any significant movement overall. It may be possible that clean, low mileage cars with good documentation may be rising a bit faster than the norm, but I am not seeing SC's or Carrera's move very fast.

That's true. I was actually looking to pick up another car as I spend my time split between two coasts, but they are becoming harder to afford...at least the clean ones.

It seems that 2 years ago you could get a fairly clean SC for $12.5k-$15k, but now I can barely find anything I would want to buy at that price. The clean cars with reasonable miles and documented maintenance are bringing high teens to low twenties.

At least that is what I am seeing unless someone can point me to some that are more reasonable. Dont get me wrong, I am happy that our cars are appreciating, but I am looking to buy a second one and it is getting more expensive by the month it seems.

I have long been of the opinion that nice SCs and Carreras are WAY underpriced, given how much pure fun (at the very least) they afford. ...just a matter of time, it'll change....
Actually I don't really care, I like mine, wish to keep it; continue to turn down offers to buy, too, by simply offering mine up at "too high a price".
I love my Brother's response to people who ask him about his cars (not Porsches), "Ummm, do you see a 'For Sale' sign on this *&(^*(% thing?!?"...lol.... Once he buys something (the latest a Special Edition Mustang), it's his....for a good long while. And that car is sweet....

Damn!! That was a steal! Likely why it sold in a day. I guess the deals are still out there. Just need to be in the right place at the right time. I would have paid $9500 for that in a second.

That makes 2 of us.

The magic words are "clean and low miles". These are great cars but old and the supply of clean un molested ones is drying up. Clean used ones will always bring a premium.

Yep. Me thinks the seller left a few Gs on the table....nice....

i think that anything with over 100k miles and with a tired engine and tranny spooks a buyer who sees another $25,000 for r&r on top of sales price

for $30k young guys are buying new, almost bullet proof, machines like the EVO or its sister in the Subaru

I've been brokering 911s for years and the last 5-7 months has seen Carreras bounce back from the bottom of their depreciation curve. SCs started sooner, but never dropped as low. I'm seeing SCs back to high teens and more; Carreras out of the teens and into the 20s for good examples (more still for G50s). Only the 'gotta sell' cars are less.

But as with all small marketplaces, there will be occasional pricing outside the curve. My neighbor bought a passable SC for $10K a couple months back, but the seller left a good $4K on the table.

That is more inline with what I am seeing as well.

did i miss something

current issue of Excellence shows my 84 worth a lot more than a year ago

hope it's true

Mitch Leland 05-28-2011 08:30 AM

I sure hope so since I've got a ton more money in my car than the market will bring. I bought a low mileage car 3 years ago and paid top dollar, then by the time you take care of some "have to" maintenance issues, personal taste issues, some performance goodies you're really upside down in the car. However I never intended to make money on my hobby and passion for the car, but it would be nice to know that the market is catching up to my "investment"...

Mitch,
I'm glad I'm not the only one. My problem is that I've only owned the car four months.
