Because I'm trying to figure out why I'm having such a hard time with the 16s when the 15s stripped so easily.....

Well after several hours, I have conceded for today. Got them stripped, and the rash sanded out, now onto the fine sanding, compounding, and polish. Got one to a semi presentable state.....

Went thru the same process a couple of years ago. I had a neat solution to smooth out the finish. I spun them on the car! Check it out, might work for you.

Send 'em out....you'll be glad you did......no offense, but you could be mowing lawns in the neighborhood, much easier, less time spent, and you would probably come out ahead..... :)

not sure if it will work for annodization but i found that permatex gasket remover works amazing at taking off powder coating. goop it on, let it sit over night, wipe it off with a paper towel the next day.

Beer works but lay off the Screech when your working with power tools. Don't ask, it was a buddy and it was ugly.

Use easy off oven cleaner, but use the yellow can.
It has Lye in it...all the other colored easy off cans do not have lye.
That is the stuff that does the trick.

It's the paint in the center I'm having the problem with. The anodizing came off fine. The center black paint won't budge with aircraft stripper OR lye based oven cleaner.

The "ingredient" for removing the anodize is lye - sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or caustic soda. When you buy the can of 'Easy Off' make sure it is the dangerous yellow version :) Or otherwise some drain cleaners contain it... nasty stuff, wear gloves and eye protection and do it outside! The grey foaming scum it generates is the anodize layer coming off...

When I stripped my 15s I had one wheel that was early 70s and the other that was late 70s or early 80s. The early 70s wheel was very hard to strip with aircraft stripper. It took 5 iterations to get it fully clean, the last 3 each sat overnight. Whatever they used in the early 70s was tough stuff. The later wheel stripped easy the first time. I have not stripped the 16s yet. I am guessing it will be as easy as the later wheel. Can anyone confirm?

I've given up on chemicals. I ordered this for my 90 degree grinder. Abrasive polishing ball. Used in marine applications. With my variable speed grinder should doo the trick. I hope....
