Adelphia Cable finally put the new "Speed" channel back on basic cable after thousands of complaints in my area. The smart people there attempted to switch it to digital thinking everyone would pay more for that service. They were wrong. Last night was the first day it was back on service.
I get home, open a beer and click on the Speed channel to enjoy some racing. What do I find? Five hours of motorocross including coverage of a dealer only motorcycle exhibit. No cars, no F1, no Kart, no NASCAR, no transam, nothing of interest. I can't see how NASCAR is affecting coverage since the Speed channel apparently has too much air time to fill already. Venting over.

At first I thought.... over 6000 signatures, thats pretty impressive. Maybe they would take the hint that there are alot of people interested in coverage other than Nascar etc. Maybe even have a speedvision 2 kinda like MTV2. Then it occured to me that 6500 is nothing...and that the odds of them taking that into account borders on fantasy. You might be able to get 6500 Pinto owners to sign a petition stating that they want a PintoVision channel...but do you think they would ever honor the thought? UH, NO. Unfortunately guys... we are outnumbered...(feel free to insert any stereotype of the "typical" nascar fan here) and there isn't much that we can do about it. They have to sell all those Ford Taurus' and Chevy Monte Carlos... the almighty $$ rings true. Think of it another way... If what WE wanted to watch and do was the most popular, the WHOLE country would be driving around in Porsches and Austin Healeys, and Miatas, and Jaguars.... then what we have wouldnt be all that special! Actually, there was another petition prior to the changeover. I think it had 60,000 or 70,000 signatures. It meant nothing. This is all about FOX's multi-million dollar 5-year fee paid to NASCAR for the right to air NASCAR races. They are using Speed Channel as a means of getting more viewers for the FOX broadcasts of the races so they can sell more commercial time. It's really that simple. I'd do the same if I were Rupert Murdoch.
Well, actually, if I were Rupert Murdoch I'd retire and buy a 73 RSR 2.8 and a Winnebago. I'd just drive around the country all day, every day with my wife following behind in the motorhome ![]() |

You guys are looking at the wrong petition!
A couple weeks ago I posted this message with this link and never got any replys: Do the world a favor and... Do the world a favor and please sign this petition if you don't want 24-hour-a-day NASCAR programming on SpeedChannel. http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?svsn Over 62,000 people have already signed it, and you have nothing to lose, only to give. I think there may be hope!!!

I want my B.T.C. Brit touring car champs)
(sung to the tune of "I want my MTV") Leland... I have never been able to do that without a certain amount of *****in' and complainin' then I'll let it go. Without SpeedVision coverage, F1 and Supercup we'll never see again! Is there an other source in the US?

Interesting timing for this.
I just got done sending them a bunch of emails expressing my disgust with the freakin' 12 hour span (no joke) of NASCAR-only related programming that often occurs on weekdays between 1pm and 1am. They were pretty impassioned letters. Of course, I NEVER get a response from them.
Sure, I'll sign the petitions, but I don't think they give a rat's butt. Some of these programs are such a joke. I wonder if even the NASCAR fans dig them all. Is it just me? Or is it like every NASCAR related broadcast has to be hosted by commentators that are always shouting like they're doing a voiceover for a tractor pull ad??? I'm so over the stupid gladiator-style delivery of some of these sports programs. |

Actually, it's not as bad as it may sound per their web site; and I'm one of the people who was b****in and moaning a few weeks ago.
![]() 1) F1 Practice starts tonight on SpeedChannel at 11:00 PM eastern. Rick DeBruhl and (724doorE take note) David Hobbs are the commentators along with Steve Matchet ( ![]() 2) They will be carrying the season including practice and qualifying. A couple of races will be broadcast on a tape delayed basis. I think Monaco, Canada and US. I suspect that the US race may be on a network again and then with an enhanced rebroadcast on SpeedChannel with extra incars shots, etc. like last year. I don't know about anyone else, but I really didn't like ABC's "dummied down" coverage last year. 3) They will also be carrying sports cars this weekend from Homestead and 3 days of FIA World Rally. Finally they also will be carrying CART later this month. 4) NASCAR's races now move to FOX for the rest of the year. 5) Regarding PBS911's bad experience, Speedvision/Channel has always been focused on bikes on Tuesdays. Wednesday has always been boat day. Nothing new there. Someone highlighted last weeks Speedchannel poll on this site last week. Well the results are in: almost 25K people responded and about 1/3 felt that winning the GP du Monaco would be the biggest thing (http://www.speedvision.com/auto/?lvl=3a&cat=27&id=329). 25K is a lot more then the 6k touted on the petition. Keep in mind that their broadcast base is 50M households. Life may not be so bad after all!

The biggest problem I have is with the hours that the good shows are on now (what is left of them anyway). The "channel within a channel" seems to be the problem, dominating east coast prime time with NASCRAPTV®. They have shown the Swedish round of the WRC multiple times and the Daytona 24 Hour and Grandsports races. This is about the only glimmer of hope so far. Maybe once there are a few World Challenge races and some F1 available for replay things may get better. One can only hope.
And let's sign the petitions. What can it hurt! tm

Thanks Jerry S ![]()

Im not sure you guys are seeing the whole picture, speedweek, its real big its the super bowl of stock cars, i dont like football and feel about it the same way as you guys feel about nascar, sometimes all there is on is football. you guys should feel lucky that you get speedvision, i have cable, so guess what exactly no racing at all, i race super late stock cars and i am not a big nascar fan, but there are times im glad just to see any car on tv, since tnn changed over no more racing at all, and i cant even remember anything on the 24hrs of daytona on tv this year, in january i wouldnt have cared if it was lawn mower races, racins racin, lets be glad we get to see any races at all with epa always eating at us, at the track we have to have a three foot hose on the gas pump? why? try pumping with that, i race my 911 and i even come close to any one and some bodies crying, I think we all should move to europe where there is real road racing, the benzes and the bimmers and the alphas, hey dont forget the opels, thats racing, what about cart, now that they are almost history all ovals for the indy cars with irl, come on how about the street races, thats racin, the thing is we really need to be glad we get to watch any kind of racing, i love my short track stock car racing but put me on a hill on a blanket and something cold to drink and let the road racing begin, any body know when sebring is, sorry so long, but its all about the cars, Kevin
