whats wrong with this fitting?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1306968967.jpg

A pair of these came in a box with other parts for my resto. It appears to be relatively new. It is the shine down license light from a '66.

Can someone please tell me, how this could possibly work? Is this the correct part?

Looking at it, its seems to be defective due to the fitting automaitcally shorting. Ie the current goes straight back to the chasis of the car via the holder....

Thanks for the replies.

Roland

Does one end of the lamp have ceramic insulation surrounding the contact point?

One end has a plastic insulator... The other is a pressed brass fitting that connects directly to the frame of the unit. What I dont understand is the holder appears to short the bulb...

Any chance it's wearing the wrong bulb? Looks like a narrower and longer bulb would allow the bulb holder in the middle of the bracket to contact glass rather than the metal end of the bulb, thus not shorting out the lamp.

Just my $.02.

The only thing i can imagine is that the metal L bracket portion is designed to hold the bulb in place around the glass portion of the bulb. It looks like something was lost in translation. Wrong bulb?

Here is an image from another site (sorry wayne). It appears slightly longer albeiet skinnier. It would therefore rattle around in the holder. Is there supposed to be something around the metal bracket that holds the bulb? Does anyone have an image please?

That would be "Albeit"

Looks like it should take a bayonete bulb like this:

Take the bulb out and take a pic of the hole. If it has 2 slots around the circle, it's a bayonet socket.

+1

Wrong bulb in the first pic. The brass plug at the other end is for connecting the tag for the earth cable only.

Two pictures from our host.

Note: @ 41 & 42... 42 is a bayonet bulb.

Ha! Somebody put the wrong bulb in there! It takes a bayonet base bulb. The bulb itself does not bulge out from the base, it looks like the eraser end of a pencil.

+1 for LJ851's idea that the "L bracket is pressed in backwards. The bulb is correct.

On edit - that won't work either, the bracket won't let the light reach the terminal.

How about using electrical tape on ID of the bracket? - klugey, but would work.
Or isolate entire bracket from chassis.
yeah, somethings wrong

I think dad911 nailed it .

just tried the bayonet - spot on. Thanks folks... Feel like a dill... Always learning I guess!

Aha - I mistakenly though those tubular bulbs came with the assy.
