Metallic in paint respray?
Hi.
I'm restoring a Sepia Brown '72T. My thread is below for those interested in pics, etc. My question is this: the painter asked if I wanted metallic in the paint. Do I want this? He said it might add a little luster to the car, but they're used to painting domestic classics that have high shine paint jobs. What's best for my 72? I want to keep it original, but don't mind a really sharp paint job - it's brown after all. Thanks much. Pelican Parts Technical BBS - Powered by vBulletin |

I think that if it was my car, I'd stick with a color that Porsche offered during the era in which your car was built. Which means, probably, no metallic. But that's just me.

I think metallic brown would look out of place on your car. You should look at a car that has a metallic brown to see what it looks like. I think some of the newer Carreras used a metallic brown?

I would ask for a paint chip from your painter and look at it outside. Personally, I had a Sepia Brown 1976 912E and never liked the color, but if your car was originally Sepia, I would not deviate from original.
Are they painting the full car including jambs, engine compartment, trunk, etc.? |

The one reason I would not do metallic is that a solid color is really easy to touch up (if it has no clear coat). You can spray and wet sand and buff like nothing every happen.

IMO, Please keep it original "no metallic", my vote "OE Sepia Brown", it will only get appreciated in time when it's original & if it's done right/correct you won't have any regrets not to have to spend money, effort & time to bring it back to OE. But of course, it's your car.

I don't think Sepia Brown is the right color for a metallic. Keep the paint original.
