Basic exhaust Questions sc/3.2
 
I have a ROW 3.2 attatched to my old ROW 1978 sc exhaust, I'm curious
1. where the best performance gains can be found on this.
2.Sc exhaust system is worse than the carrera correct? BY how much?
3.And someone told me he can get my car up 30-40 horsepower for 700 dollars only with exhaust, is this possibly?? Remember I live in California so he would have to pass smog as well.

I searched and was still confused :confused:

30-40 hp is optimistic....more like 15-20, less on a 3.2 as the exhaust has less restrictions.

Going with early HEs or SSIs allows the engine to breathe better. Problem is that in CA you have smog issues for the modifications. The mod does not allow for a cat.

So what we have here is a 3.2 in a 1978 911 SC. In CA you will have to have a cat and air pump to pass SMOG. The cat-back exhaust upgrade to M&K would be my recommendation. It will probably up your HP only minimally, maybe 10hp. To get any more, you have to lose the cat. I doubt you would get through SMOG without the CAT and air pump with all the exhaust plumbing in place. You could put a pipe on it before the exhaust and reinstall the cat every year or two when you have to smog it.

Welcome to the Republic of Kalifornia....move to Idaho, we have no such nonsense for 1979 and older.....

Yeah our cutoff date is 1974, i don't have a cat and my mechanic doesn't either with the same setup and he passes smog. He said if needed he could temporarily put one on so im not worried about that. What about heat exchangers, premufflers and stuff like that?

Actually, it's MY 1975 or older that are smog exempt. Also depends on which county it's registered in. See here: Smog Information

Your wrench may live in one of the few SD county ZIP codes that doesn't require smog check; otherwise you're getting bad advice. Regardless of how clean your HC, CO, and NO levels are, if you're required to have a smog cert you're going to fail the visual 'under hood' inspection if the inspecting technician finds any of the emissions equipment (including cat, O2 sensor, air pump, EGR, thermal reactors, fuel injection components, or warning lights) required on whatever MY your vehicle is, is missing or inoperative.

I had a 944S2 pass the sniffer but fail the visual because the CEL in the dash had a burned out bulb.

Search 'smog check' in this forum; you'll find plenty of more accurate -- and useful -- info than you seem to be getting from your wrench.

Youre right, when i first looked up the law i think it said cars that began production in 74 so that also included 75 models (dont quote me on that)

Im not exactly sure what he has in his car but i know its an sc and has a 3.2, they might both even be US spec. So I might not be in the same boat as him but he said I should be ok and if not we will do the tweaks required

With the 3.2, there is a lot of low hanging fruit that can increase HP for not much money - if you can get rid of the cat. B&B headers, tweaking the DME switch, and a Steve Wong chip will really make these engines come alive.
