the truth? #2: 915 in 901 space

Another question for the board. the drivetrain for the 71 project car is from a 78 SC(RIP). I hear that the tunnel has to be modified to fit the 915 into the space where a 901 used to reside. Is this true or false?

If true? what has to be modified? Is the space too narrow? shallow? short?

Please shed some light on the underside of my car.

Jamie!

How's the project going? If you need a hand, let me know.

Never put a 915 in an early car, but from what I've heard you need to hammer a little more room. Test fit and then hammer away!

Have fun!

Jamie,

I recently completed a 3.3 Turbo/915 tranny install in my '70. You'll need to beat up the tunnel slightly for correct fit. Good luck.

Here's a hint. Temporarily remove the front cover from the transaxle and mount it onto trans. mount (don't forget to drain the oil first). This assembly is a little lighter to handle to see where you have to smack the tunnel. Use a large ball peen hammer. Protect the enlarged area with some undercoat or paint before reinstalling the drivetrain.

I had heard the same thing but i had none of these problems. Mine fit right in, and my 915 has the gear oil cooler off of the side too.

Thanks for all the responses. I had read there was a problem in the Project 911S from European Car. I have not made it to that part of the project yet. Removing the cover and front mount is a good idea. Sure beats lifting the tranny.

Paul, I guess the "individuality" of these cars will determine how much difficulty I find.

thanks again for all your help.
