88 3.2 hunting / seeking at idle, need car tomorrow morning....help appreciated
First of all my apologies for not trawling through the site looking for answers, I'm out of time and just wanted to see if anyone here had a simple solution for me.
Car is a stock 88 3.2 911, I just finished a valve adjust and I also installed a battery cut off switch on the neg terminal while I was on. Before this the car ran fine. Now, 50% of the time it hunts between 1000 - 1200 rpm at idle. The other 50% it idles nice. Car drives nice and sounds good too. When I installed the battery switch I had to disturb some earths at the stud near the battery but I'm sure I put them all back on the stud and tightened it down. When I did the valve adjust I removed one half of the air box for access on the right, along with the AC compressor, and on the left I removed the lead to the coil, the two brown earth wires from the manifold and the big multi plug at the fuse panel. I also pushed the 02 wire to one side. This all gave me enough access. Can any of you guys think of something I may have disturbed that could be causing this? I appreciate the info is probably on the site somewhere but I have leave for the evening now and in the morning I need the car. Leaves me an hour or so in the morning to make a quick fix. A couple of pointers from someone who had this problem and fixed it would be much appreciated, or better yet someone who suspects I knocked off the 'x' plug or the 'y' hose and would cause exactly the symptoms I'm talking about! Failing that, the car is perfectly drivable, its just a little silly sounding while sitting at the lights. Anyway, any help appreciated. Thanks in advance of any offerings. ![]() |

the hunting idle could be a vacuum leak.
Check that you put the air box back on and did not move one of the vacuum lines that go to it or loosened the large rubber hose to the throttle body. RIch |

+1 w/ Rich, and since you moved the wires to the O2 sensor, I'd check those connections as well.

I'll double check all the air box connections in the morning. It's odd that it only does it 50/50 of the time though. That's why I was leaning towards an electrical issue.

Does the outside & engine temperature different between the 50/50? If not it could be the famous Electrical Gremlins ![]()

What about the idle control valve? It wouldn't be related to the work you did, so it would purely be coincidental, but I would still pull it off and give it good spraying with carb cleaner. My car has randomly done the idle hunt thing in the past, but hasn't been an issue since I cleaned it thoroughly. It's a 15 minute project.

To be hones, I didn't drive it much yesterday. I get the feeling it idles nice when cool and then hunts when warm.
I'm going to check for vac leaks and I'll even give the icv a blast of cleaner. Maybe I'll get lucky. Thanks all. |

Thanks for the quick answers on what must be a well doscussed issue. This morning before I left I cleaned the ICV and the problem is fixed. Thanks all. Much appreciated for the quick help.

Dang I love the cheap and easy fixes. Somebody should start a thread on these "no start" and "hunting idle" threads just to find out how many times the solution took 5 minutes or less and cost $0.00 for our "exotic" cars.

Andy Now that would have cost you probably a couple of hundreds at the shop ![]() ![]() ![]() So you tell the wife (if you have a boss) how Pelican save you a bundle and take half of it ($100) and put it in the Upgrade bank account for our "exotic" cars ![]() ![]() ![]() From past experience, she (the boss) might share this point of view ![]()
