My first 911 - engine code?
 

Hi all,
My first post! I've recently bought a 911 (1968) with a newer engine, I believe it's a 2.7 engine from the 70's. I've checked the vin number which I believe is a 911L, possibly from America (I live in Australia). I can't seam to track the engine number though. Can anyone help? The numbers are as follows:

VIN 11810152
Engine 6369390

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your 911, always great to see another aussie here.. I have checked, and appears that engine number matches a J series August 1975 to July 1976 type 911. hope that helps you.. Are you in Sydney?

It is a 1976 2.7 litre engine with 165 hp. The serial numbers 6369001 to 6369435 are for engines mated to Sporto transmissions. Chgeck the engine type number. It should be 911/86 to confirm Sporto origin.

mmm interesting, is a sporto box 4 speed? I ask as my car has a 5 speed with a dog leg first gear...

A sportomatic is an automatic trans that can be "manually" shifted in sport mode. But it really is an auto trans.

mmm the plot thickens, its definitely not an auto gearbox so the engine must of be married up to a different gearbox. Is there a way of tracking where my car originated i.e. which country - it's a RHD drive car but I guess it could of been converted?

ROW? Rest of world? So it could be from anywhere? I thought 911L was the luxury model (US only) - car is RHD.

No the L wasn´t exclusive to the US. There were 720 "L" ROW models made in 1968 and 449 "L" models in addition went to the US(Coupes)

I remember your car when it was for sale. From the pics it looks like it has had a 70's/80's body update, along with 90's cup wheels etc. I wouldn't be too concerned if the engine isn't correct for the car, make sure its running ok and you can enjoy it. If you are worried about originality, you bought the wrong car.

I'm not "concerned" about the originality, just intrigued to know where it came from and the history with it being so old.... I may even look at replacing the panels / interior to try and get it back to its original spec - not sure how easy that would be to source the earlier panels etc....

It would be great to return it back to original one day.

My records show it is a 1968L (not USA). You could do a VIN check with Porsche Australia to find out where it was first delivered.

As mentioned the engine is a 1976 2.7 that was mated to a Sporto box. It sounds like you have the original 901 box still.

Good luck with the car, keep your eyes open for early parts to start collecting :).
