Installing new speedo cable without the casing?

Is it possible to install a new speedo cable without replacing the casing which passes through the tunnel?

I ask, as someone suggested on here that you can. I don't have the new cable yet. My old one broke up by the clock, so I could pull the old one out through the back. But, looking at the piece that i retrieved from the back of the clock, it looks to me that that won't pass through the casing because of the collar on it that stops in penetrating to far into the clock.

Any advice appreciated.

I have done this on other cars (not Porsches) and it has worked great. Can you pass it through from the clock end? I don't know what the pickup end looks like... If not, you might be able to buy the cable with one end not attached, then swage it on after running the cable into the sheath.

are you talking about just replacing the metal cable part and not the plastic casing? I would look to see if it is sold separately; if not, that probably means it isn't possible. On some cars it is sold and can be replaced separately (some old Fords for example) but no sure about 911.

Yes, just the steel cable and not the casing.
