I am back in the club!
After a few years of not having a 911 I bit the bullet and took a chance on an ebay car. Just drove it back up to SF from LA without any issues - so far so good.
Its a 73 911 E Targa with a 3.2 (which is why I couldnt say no to it). Its got a fresh suspension with Konis and swap bars, and I couldnt find any rust on it. It also has a redone interior. The bad is that it has the worst paint job in the history of 911s. Originally appears to be a mint green, but at some point in the past was repainted red. All the chrome was also spray painted black. If it wasnt such a nice body and engine I would have walked away. Im calling her "The Ugly Duckling". Where are the paint codes on these things so I can see what the original color was? Not sure what to do about the paint. Whats the cost these days to get a car changed back to an original color? Should I just get a cheap paintjob now so its all one color, and then later on do a full resto back to original color? First steps are to at least get the chrome bits back to chrome. A lot of the paint just chips off, whats the best way to remove spraypaint from the chrome trim like the Targa bar, windshield, etc? Can I use some power tool or paint remover, or am I just going to just have to chip away at it with some plastic scraper? A finger nail works pretty good on its own. Anyway, Im excited to be back. I spent some time with some old BMW 2002s but I just couldnt get over the feeling from having a 6 behind me. Also how can I change my signature now that I have something different? Thanks! I removed the black factory paint from the trim on my car.
I used aircraft stripper and it came right off. The aluminum underneath was etched so I just polished it up. Truth be known, I polished one piece of it and found it an extremely tedious task. So I took the whole bunch of it down to an instrument shop near my house. They polish all the brass instruments for the local school district. They said polishing the aluminum trim was trivial compared to a trombone. It cost $150 to get all of it done. That's a Ganga, if you ask me. H
