Here's something I posted here in '08 which maybe helpful:
Using the alt. light as a diagnostic tool: 1. no light with ignition "on" not running a. bad regulator b. bad light c. open slip rings d. bad brushes 2. light stays "on" with key "off" - shorted diode/diodes 3. light glows brightly while running a. open diode/diodes b. shorted rotor/stator winding c. shorted alt. light wire to ground d. bad regulator 4. light glows dimly & gets brighter with higher RPMs - voltage drop, e.g. @ alt. B+ post or @ starter connection 5. light flashes at low RPMs - bad slip rings 6. light glows dimly at all RPMs - open diode/diodes

So put me on a highway

Thanks 304065...My battery was not being charged and my idiot light was not working.
Searched the forum and followed your post and checked the bulb first...it was good and when I cleaned the contacts, it started lighting up when the key is on...engine not running. Checked voltage and now battery is charging great and light is working as it should. Thanks again to 304065 and this forum...Wouldn't think a bulb not working would disable the charging system. I was very close to being knee deep into the alternator.

"my Valeo doesn't need the resistor"
Not the case for a standard Valeo! All the ones worked on (few 100) over the past 10+ years require a light/resistor to 'start'. That's why there's a D+ post on the unit. All alternators where the field current is self-generated require some starting current or a #15 power to switch the regulator 'on' to use the direct battery voltage output on the alternator for the field current. It's NOT reliable to assume that the residual field magnetism will always 'start' the alternator under all conditions, e.g. temperatures, if that is what now occurs.

I wasn't clear
should have said My Valeo doesn't require the resistor with my stock bulb as it seems the Bosch does
