VIN location on fenders?

Is there a VIN id tag or sticker on the front and rear fenders on an 87 911? I did an extensive search but could not find any info on whether VIN numbers are supposed appear on the fenders themselves. Thx.

On an 87?... No there isn't.

The later 964 and 993 cars had white paper stickers in various place around the car.

That's not true for US cars.

In 1984, Congress passed a law that required certain new cars (and replacement parts) deemed to be high theft potential to have VIN stickers in various places to prevent chop shops from easily disposing of parts. This included 911, 930 and 928S4's built after 9-1-86.

The little VIN stickers were placed on bumpers, fenders, quarters, hood, engine cover and engine/transmission. Original parts to the car show the vehicle VIN. Replacement parts built after that date show a symbol indicating it as a replacement part.

On 911's, the fender VIN sticker is on the inside, upper rear portion of the fender. Open your doors, and shine a flashlight up into the top of the fender to see the VIN tag there.

Thanks, I didn't know that. It would be a great way to verify how original a car is.

Do you have any photos of these VIN stickers?
