Do these costs sound about right?

Hi all,

I'm new to Porsche ownership and I recently purchased a 68 911 (with a 2.7 76 engine) - i thought I'd send it to a garage for them to have a quick look over (i know I should of done this before purchasing). They found a couple of issues which they've sorted, prices are as follows and in Australian $

Reconditioned window motor $400
2 new (from Germany) window switches $60 each
Odometer & Rev counter repaired & new glass fitted to Fuel gauge $270

They also said that the car had an oil leak which looked to be coming from the crancase seal??.... he said he couldnt really do anything with that and that it wasnt leaking "much". How costly would this be to fix - I don't like the idea of the car leaking in the garage. He also said there wasnt much oil in and that the car ran hot - he has since put in 3.5 litres of oil.....!

Cheers
Steve

No, it's just a normal garage.... they are doing the roadworthy for me (test to ensure it's road legal)...

Prices sound fair to me, especially for AU dollars.....PM "Fishcop" on here. He's local to the Brisbane area and knows the shops/local experts.......Does your 2.7 have an oil cooler? If not, you really need one in that the Queensland climate.......Been to your part of the world twice, love it, but can get warm............G'luck Mate......

first off, welcome to the forum.

second, this being the internet, pictures or it didn't happen

and as for the oil, you hopefully know that air-cooled 911 engines have the oil checked with the engine both fully warmed up and with the engine running. if your garage checked the oil with the engine off, then they will have added far too much oil.

some of the other aussie pelicanheads should chime in soon with more and better advice than i can give.

Welcome. In my highly superior experience base of 3 or 4 years (not that superior really), I'd say the prices were not too high. But given that they are not porsche savvy, I would have a very small suspicion that the items may not have been fixed 100%. The motor seems high, but not inordinately so. Other than that, I think the cost was reasonable for this type of car. Later you will save money by doing things yourself if so inclined.

After you get the road worthy thing done, start to look a little more into this crankcase seal issue he brought up to see if it is a real concern. They all leak at some time, some more than others, but investigate it with someone who really knows these cars.

Stevo mate I wouldn't use a normal garage if I were you, I'd stick with guys like T&D Auto, Wayne Park, I have an ex Brisbane Porsche (everything Euro) mechanic that I use in Brissy - he's mobile and may be able to help.. But I'd never use a local garage that didn't know these cars well ...

Just my 2c ..

Yeah, I don't think that oil leak comment was accurate. I have no idea about AU prices.

Thanks for the feedback, Yes Aldente - been on the other forum, lots of helpful people. I was the guy asking about engine codes and Vin numbers....
I'm just waiting on the window switches to turn up now, I can then pick the car up from the garage and get it registered.
Looking forward to meeting all the Brisbane 911 owners.
