Starting problem with fuel pump

Some of the time (little of the time) before I start the car when I turn the key to the ignition on position, I get the fuel pump cranking for a second, of a few, and then it stops (when it senses it has pumped enough fuel down to the engine, I assume). THe only problem is, it doesnt do this every time, most of the time the fuel pump doest run when I turn on the ignition, and as a result of this, I have trouble starting it when the pump does not run. Im not exactly sure where the fuel pump is, but I would like to try to locate the fuse for it as well as the other wiring for it to make sure that is all in good shape before I come to the conclusion that the pump itself is shot.

THanks for the help
Scott

it should not run without the engine running, and there is nothing that senses when to shut it off, as far as pressure goes. if it is running with the key on, then you either have a wiring problem or the PO has done something, like remove the connector from the rear of the AFM.
there is a switch in the AFM that shuts off the FP when there is no air flow, i dont know if one has ever gone bad/dirty that would make it do what is going on, but it may be worth looking into, but, try the FP relay first

ok, thanks for the help. Some of the time, the fuel pump will run for a little while when i put the key in the ignition on position, but that has only happened a few times when the fuel system needs to be primed. Other times, when it needs to be primed, i have to go remove the air filetr and hold the lever in the air box until it is primed. I think there is some problem with the fuel system on my car, because I feel like it needs to be primed much more often than it should.

THanks
Scott

check residiual fuel pressure. sounds like the accumulator might be bad, but test it first. you might want to go ahead and replace the check valve.

Just wondering, what is the fuel accumulator's purpose/what does it do? ANd is it necessary in the fuel system?

THanks
Scott
