tub undercoating

Question:
I have noticed different tub up restorations including and excluding the textured undercoating. I know it helps for noise and protects the wheel wells from rock damage and keeps hard debris front denting the fenders and telegraphing through to the outside fender faces.

So after stripping the tub and getting it prepped for primer (or powder coating), is it necessary to apply the textured undercoating? What are the negatives of not using the undercoating?

Thanks everyone in advance,

Mark
