Please help, my car wont start...sometimes
Well here's the deal fellas. My starter motor sometimes would not turn over. No 'click', just dead. Battery is new. When I reach over into the engine and tug on the harness going to the starter, it would start sometimes. I disconnected the connections on the starter, cleaned them up, and reinstalled and made sure that everything is nice and snug and not loose. But I still get this sometimes. Would it be a solenoid problem? Any input is appreciated.
Thanks Clint |

Clint,
Your solenoid may be bad or you could have a problem with your wiring. Also could be the ignition switch. Too many variables here to diagnois right now. Way to check it is to wait until it does not turn over, then check for power at the solenoid actuation wire. If there is power there then this means that you are getting power from the ignition switch to the solenoid. If there is no power at this terminal then you either have a bad ignition switch or a break in the wire or a bad terminal on either end. If there is power at the solenoid and the solenoid is not engaging, then most likely the solenoid is bad. You need to do a bit more detective work to pinpoint the problem and any problem that does not hard fail, it can be frustrating! Also, just because the battery is new does not mean that its good. Also check the terminals on the battery. Do your lights come on? Good quick test to see if you have corrosion on the battery cables. Joe

My car was doing this last summer. It was the solenoid. I just replaced the whole starter assembly.
The best way to check if it's the solenoid is take the starter off, and take it to a local auto parts store that test them. If you need any help just let me know. Replacing the starter isn't htat dificult. But with a few tips it makes it alot easier. |

Thanks guys. I really dread taking the starter off because I always have a hard time doing so. Probably because the bolts ( or were they nuts?) were the allen type. In any case, I think it may be the ignition switch because when this happened aagain yesterday, I lifted the car and connected both leads on the solenoid with a jumper wire and the starter turned. When I tried using the iginition switch, it wouldnt. Then it started working again after a while. Im going to replace the switch in the near future, but for now, Ive connected a push button switch and left it under the seat for emergency situations.
Thanks again fellas! Clint |

Check and clean the 14 pin connector on back of regulator panel, left side of engine compartment.
