OK, started to replace everything about the valves except the intake valves themselves, but noted that the valve guides are allowing little to no play, even with the new exhaust valves. I am thinking about keeping the old valve guides installed and just replacing everything else. Thoughts????
I was also wondering if I should replace the valve stem seals or just leave the old ones on also. The old ones appear to be in good shape, but appearances are just that. I have no imperical data to help make a decision. Everything in this motor has been well within spec with great amounts of room for further wear. The cylinder heads appear almost new! intake stems are larger than exhaust, and can run with less clearance to the guide. there should still be some slightly noticable movement when you move the valve back and forth. due to the potential for seizing, the exhaust guides need slightly more clearance to the stem. the guides do most of the heat transfer out of the valve. did you mic the intake stems for taper? they get quite worn. use new seals, the white ones. they're cheap.

John,
The amount of movement noticed in the valve itself with the old valve guides is minimal (~.01 mm deflection) or not measurably more than the new valve guide and the new and old valves. The noses of the old intake valve guides look almost new. The noses of the old exhause valve guides show slight wear and darkening exhibited from normal use. Any help on how to remove the old stem seals and apply the new ones without damaging anything is greatly appreciated. I have all the new parts sitting here on the living room floor. (Glad the wife isn't here to send me to the '20 degrees garage floor!!!!)

pop them off with a screwdriver. try not to dent the head where you lever the blade against the head. the install tool is a 13mm deep socket, cleaned of all the dirt inside, an extension, and a hand twist knob (optional equipment).
