So many good stories here. Mine is much simpler.
After lusting after 911's since I was a kid in junior high back in the early '70s, I finally decided I could make it happen back in 2011. I sold my very nice 240Z to a guy in Norway, and went shopping for Porsches. Remember that it was a different market back in 2011. I had 5 or 6 '74-89 911s within driving distance of Eugene to choose from. (These days, there are rarely any at all.) The choice of the car I bought was simple. It was by far the best condition and had the best history of any car in my price range at the time. It had been on the market for a long time, with little interest. My wife and I believe that the problem was the colors. While Chiffon white is widely admired, one of the POs had changed the interior (seats, and panels) from the original brown to a rather sick-looking ivory. We bought it anyway. The car was just too good otherwise. It has been a great car. I'm not a real big Chiffon fan, but after upgrading the interior (sport seats, Abarth wheel, square weave carpet and coco mats) during the reversion back to brown, I've decided Chiffon isn't all that bad. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1396229756.jpg Interior as when I bought it: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1319416271.jpg Interior today: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1488140514.jpg |
My dad was a sports car fan, including Porsches. He even did a little amateur racing back in the day (before I was born). I suppose I caught the bug from him.
When a co-worker had one up for sale I grabbed it. Was back in '98 or thereabouts. I didn't know squat about them at the time. I just got lucky that mine was an S model with Bilsteins, front cooler and S brakes. Turned out the guy I bought it from was a slippery character. The car had a couple thousand bucks of overdue registration fees. I had to wring that out of him with the threat of a lawsuit. Since then I've re-bushed all the suspension, had shocks re-built, had top end done (certs were done previously), synchros and sliders in the trans and all fresh CV's and brakes. My total investment, including the $5k initial purchase is around $18 k. Not much to look at, but it's fun to drive. I even get out to about a half dozen track days a year in it. My wife and I pop the top when the weather is good and go to the beach or mountains. It's been a fun reliable car. Not terribly comfortable (we both wear earplugs on long drives), but a genuine motoring experience... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1488142482.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1488142482.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1488142743.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1488142743.jpg |
I became a porsche freak after watching lemans in the late 70's and went after a 911 when i enlisted in the navy in 1987. Ended up with a 72 911e. Don't plan on ever selling either.
