1969E- What is this dash button
Hello everyone,
It's me, the slow restoration specialist! I am working on taking the dash trim off. Does anyone know what this button does? (photo) It does not look stock. I don't see a button to the right of the ignition in any photos of similar cars. It has two red wires that run along the inside of the interior (they were under the carpet prior to restoration). The two wires push through the back metal wall to the engine compartment. (photo) One attaches to the side panel (photo) It attaches to that black square piece just above the two relays, in the photo. The other attaches to the top of I think a fuel canister (photo). The button is secured by a ring that screws on that you can see in the photo, and it is seized. I was going to dremel it off so I can take off my plate and clean it up, etc. but I thought I should see what the button is first. Thanks!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308451491.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308451508.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308451528.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308451549.jpg |
I see that the wire leads to the cold start fuel solenoid. The prior owner evidently had connected this to the dash switch to help with starting. Normally this function is controlled by a thermo time switch. The time that the solenoid is open is dependent on ambient temperature and cranking time. If one wants to override the thermo time switch, then just connect 12 volts via an intermittent contact switch to the solenoid. When the solenoid is activated, fuel flows to small tubes in the air cleaner and then sprays into the stacks. This is what I have done. Hope this helps. Good luck. Paul.

Thank you Paul. I guess it is part of the history of my car so I will keep it. Or at least replace it since I will probably have to destroy the button to remove it.
Why are there two wires? |
one wire likely connects to 12 volts, the second is downstream of the switch, and sends 12 volts back to the solenoid when the switch is depressed(activated).
|
That's what I thought, I just don't know why the po sent a wire all the way to the back for 12 volts.
I do remember a few times when I bought the car that I couldn't restart it until it had cooled down. Maybe I should have pushed the button! :) Thanks again pjh. |
