Rear package shelf - po'd at the PO
 

The PO cut through the factory speaker grills in the rear package shelf to allow the magnets from his A/D/S plate-mount component speakers to fit through. Now I've restored all the leather in the shelf-seat-back module, but am at a loss as towhat to do with the (fugly) holes.

Options include:
1. Cut 'em even bigger to drop new speakers in from the top. Would require building up the top surface to allow a 3.5" drop from surface to substrate for new speakers. Perhaps speaker frames or boxes? Has anyone else installed new 6x9s in the package shelf?
2. Replace the module with a new unit from Original Fit Interiors (leather with depth enough for new speakers). ~ $250.
3. Fabricate some sort of cover and install over the holes and mount new speakers elsewhere.

Notes: Having made the decision on the set-up, the big issue is what to do with the shelf package. I'm not going to install big subs anywhere. I am going to use rear speakers (dual voice coil, bi-amped. I know, but that will be sufficient for my needs), and MBQuart components in the doors. The head unit is a Blaupunkt Tokyo. I'll be re-using the PO's A/D/S power amps and fitting new cross-overs.

I have been through this on my '78 SC.

I ended up reverting to the original look. That was/is covered with only the diamond-shaped holes showing, perfectly flat otherwise on the top. I bought the upper material only from Original Fit and pulled the upper fiberboard from the lower.

Next, you have to reinforce the speaker mounts. What Porsche did was sandwich a fine mesh between the two fiberboard halves that make up the top section - the PO had cut through the mesh. So I went to a hardware store and bought decorative metal mesh, putting two large sections between the slightly lifted fiberboard and securing the whole assembly with 3M glue and heavy stapes.

Then I put the upper skin on, restapled everything, and routed the wires after putting the speakers in. Now looks quite original, with only the nice diamond holes showing and other wise stock. Had to be careful what speakers could fit, so built up the very backmost foam 1/1" bar that is put there to give it lift.

If you own a Targa, take this opportunity to look at and check your defroster wires prior to putting the shelf in. Also be sure to check for any rubbing between the package shelf edges and the defroster wires. You might test fit the item prior to putting the material on to cut away any interference that you might find. Typically you are fine but with the material it can rub and cause problems.

Finally, I made no allowance to put the strap holders back in or put snaps back on. I could have done this but chose not to.

Could anyone post a pic of what the underside of their original parcel shelf looks like? Like czwbkx, I think a previous owner has had a go at my shelf. Half of it is black plastic and the other half is hardboard!
