Sherwood,
I use dye.. I have found it better in finding small leaks..
My $.02...

I just went through a upgrade and found several leaks. I replaced my old evaporator with a larger M.Benz and a 928 blower and a custom box to hold it.I had 1 hose off of the dryer leaking and replaced all hoses. The last leak that threw me was the shaft seal on the compressor. I am in Texas and need cold air.Good luck

A couple of schools of thought. Yes. Dye and flourescent leak detector can be used. There are a couple of caveats. Dye displaces refrigerant capacity. On older, R-12 systems with enough capacity, inserting dye can have negligible effect on cooling capacity. However, on newer vehicles designed for an exact volume of R134a/HC110A, the system capacities are smaller in volume. With dye, there's less volume for refrigerant. It's also impossible to know how many times dye has been added during previous A/C service and POs.

In addition, a strategic refrigerant/dye leak in the interior can/will stain clothing and upholstery. Fortunately, the stain will only be visible with a black light. Unfortunately, the stain can be permanent if not removed.

That's the conservative approach anyway.
