Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor Replacement
 
I have done some research on how to replace the CHT Sensor and found great articles and step by step procedures on how to do it. Everything is going to plans but the only problem is that the actual replacement sensor that i purchased from pelican will not screw into the cylinder head. I have tried for 3 hours just to screw the plug into the hole and it will not catch.

I know a lot of you changed from the single head CHT tp the double wire CHT. Did any of you encounter the problem of screwing the sensor in and if so what did you do. Is there some kind of trick to getting the sensor screwed in. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

as far as i know they are interchangeable. The two sensors look the same when you put them side by side right?

You must just be struggling to get it lined up right. Best advice I can give at this point is don't force the issue or get frustrated. take a break and try again later. You don't want to screw the threads up.

pull the oval rubber piece way back along the wire, dekink the wire and turn the wire with your right hand as you turn the sensor with your left fingers. don't use the tool until it's started into the threads. then don't get it super tight, just good and snug, because it can break off, leaving the threads in the head.

yea they are fun to get to...simple job, not easy

I had a hose clamp on the 996 take about an hour of tries before I decided the car was never going to run again.....then took a break and got it...I will never forget that clamp! I did the CHT sensor on a lift, even then its pretty hard, but you can do it...keep in mind its at an angle...see if you can look in the hole with a mirror, that helped me to mentally figure out what to do with my hands

Yea it is frustrating. Take it slow and easy, don't force it.

I had even more fun getting the rubber grommet back into position. I cussed at the grommet more than the sensor.

CHT was new. then heads came off. went to shop. was removed. was then re-installed. ran fine for 50 miles then ................no worky. would start then die.


i think its 2.2 ohms to 2.8 ohms it worky and is OTAY!

Fellas, this is killing me.

I mean I had no problem getting to the location on the cylinder head of my 87 911 to screw in the new sensor. I removed the shock and bent back the protective foil and have a direct uninpeded path to the small whole. I just for the life of me cannot get the sensor thread to catch into the hole with my hand. I called Pelican and made sure i had the right sensor and they took the numbers and confirmed that it was right.

I just cannot get the threads or the sensor to catch into the hole to start turning. No one else seemed to have this much trouble getting the sensor to screw into the hole

I am baffled

The threads may be a little boogered up. I used a tap to clean them up. 10 x 1.00 mm tap.

Now that makes sense to me. Are we talking about the threads on the receiving hole or the threads on the sensor itself, because if it is the latter thee sensor is brand new. So I guess you are telling me to clean the hole up in the cylinder head. Excuse my dumbness, but please make that clear

New sensor = Threads in good condition (most likely).
so clean up the threads in the head.
Careful when you start the tap, you don't want to cross thread them.

Have you compared the diameter of the threaded portion of the old sensor to the new sensor? I just finished reading through another couple of posts on this subject and one of the posters mentioned that the sensor comes in a 13mm and 14 mm size. Perhaps the new one you have is slightly bigger than the old and that's why it won't thread into the head?
