Question about the cabriolet
I have a 1986 911 targa, my dad sold his 1975 tr6 triumph and is in the market for a 1985-1989 911 cab or /964 cab.......trying to convince him the 911 over a Z4...........he's trying to figure out was there ever any big problems with the electric convertible mechanism...is it better to have a mechanical one instead? basically he wants to know about the tops, pros v cons ect. or anything about them...... any thoughts? (I'm clueless being with the targa and all)

Because there are cables, motors and gears...they will always be a pain in the butt. I like my manual. You can get a Targa....convert to a manual top....

would he like a daily driver project? Mine is for sale... That aside, go mechanical top, which mean pre-86 I believe.

Yes, the electric tops can be a PITA. The main motor doesn't have much juice and tend to burn out frequently. Sometimes there are issues with the "brain" that runs the unit. Seems like adjustments are made more frequently.
And to top it all off, there doesn't seem to be a lot of experience here on this site regarding the repair and maintenance for the electric tops. I'm assuming many cabby owners tend to take matters into their own hands (like myself). Trial and error. Probably that's why so many convert theirs to "manual". But I still enjoy mine and will continue to muck it up. |
