Question 993 or 964

Hey,
Im a newbie..I have my 83 SC now for a couple years and looking to upgrade to either a 964 or the 993...I know the 993s have the self adjusting valves, and about 280bhp
Which would you say is a more reliable/problematic Porsche?

Thanks in advance my fellow Pelicans.

-Dave

993 all the way. Last of the air cooled and looks better IMHO

If you can swing it I would go with the 993 unless an RS or America Roadster becomes available then I would choose one of them.

Same here... I have two 993's and wouldn't trade them for anything! But, if an RS America came around at the right price... all bets are off.

993!!! Go to the 964-993 forum and read about 964 issues compared to the 993.

I've have had both the 964 and the 993. The 993 is more bullet proof; however, I prefer the 964's looks and handling.

Well, this is easy...The 964 has heavy clunky strange bumpers that look like they were super glued on while the 993 is just smooth and pretty. Also, the 993 is the last of the air cooled cars. All the bugs are gone and with the most HP. To many, it is the best 911 of all time. Really holds it's value also. Nick

993, last of the air cooled, same 911 design but with a cleaner lighter look

My opinion is a little biased but I vote 993. The 964's are nice cars as well, they retain a little bit more of the raw feeling of the earlier cars. The 993 on the other hand feels a bit more modern but is still a blast to drive. I actually prefer the ride but that's just me. You really can't go wrong with either, just drive an example of each and see which one puts the biggest smile on your face.

Oh, and regarding the issues associated with the 964's, most have been sorted by now. The 993's do command more of a premium and hold their value really well. 964's are on the rise as well. It will really boil down to personal preference. Here's a shot of mine.

Found this side by side and couldn't resist. This is a 964 C4 wide body by the way.

Simple.

993 is more reliable, less problematic mechanically than 964. Some prefer the more "classic" look of 964, however. Looks are, of course, subjective and to the taste of each person - you may very well prefer the 993 look.

Thanks for the post...Nice to see them next to each other, I agree.. I think the 993 Is the greatest 911 ever made by far. It's a shame they ruined it with the stupid 996...Thats just my opinion.

I don't get the little raised bar on the back of the 993 that looks like a big handle-what's that all about?

Dave, thanks-it really is a great car. Drove both models-one will "talk" to you.
