911 rear quarter windows
I am restoring a 1978 911SC and am attempting to get the fixed rear quarter windows out. I have read that they can be pushed out from the inside. I tried this putting a pillow over the window and pushing with my foot. Using lots of pressure the window bows out about a quarter of an inch in the middle. I think that more pressure will break things. Would some kind of a rubber lubricant worked down between the rubber and the body metal help? When removing the windshield and rear window I cut the rubber seals off since new seals cost about $50 each. I find that new quarter window seals are around$118 each, hence I'm trying to push the windows out. Mabe I'll bite the bullet and buy the seals for the quarter windows too. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Don't use your foot again.
I removed the quarter windows from a 944 by taking off the interior trim first to gain access to the rubber on the inside. I pushed (I think with a screwdriver) the seal off the metal lip a bit to create a weak point in the seal's perimeter integrity and then pushed from the inside near that point. You can have on hand on the outside to catch it. No damage to the seal. Here is a pic of the window. I will reinstall it using rope or twine. ![]() |
