Intriguing Noise
Hello to all.
I have been looking around the forum for a while and have gotten many ideas from it, but time has come to ask for advice. I have a 88 carrera, 87k miles on it. Here is the issue:confused: When the car is taken for the first drive of the day:cool: (no matter if morning afternoon or evening) and I turn to the right I hear a humming noise from the front of the car:confused:, I also feel it in the steering wheel. It is not tire rub, it is not a high pitched noise it is more lake an rubbing noise, it does it even with the brakes applied and it does not matter at what speed. The interesting part is that after a few minute of driving it disappears. Any Ideas Thanks to all for your comments.:D |
Does the "hum" change with wheel speed? It might be a wheel bearing noise that goes away when the bearing heats up a little? Turning right loads up the left front wheel bearing...

Good point, on the loading up the left front, On your question about the speed, it seems as if once it warms up it dissapears, One interesting thing was that i now have 15" fuchs and I used to have 17" BBS's and it did not hum with the 17"

Ah, the famous 15" Fuchs hum. Sure sounds like a wheel bearing to me. Why not pull the left side, look at the bearings and repack it if it seems ok... see if anything changes? Obviously you'll replace it if it is shot.

+1 Bearings, check if they are loose.

Oh so it seems that 15" Fuchs hum, maybe they are intended to be used when the radio is shot!!!
Will take a look at the wheel bearing and repack or replace as needed. Took a look at the Haynes book and seems a pretty simple DIY. Thankls |
