How do you look under the dash?
 

Two weeks ago, noticed a little smoke coming from under the dash. Your recommends is I look under the dash but at the young age of 56 I can't quite conform in a 180 degree twist for very long. Car is an 84 911 cab. I've pushed the seat back, should I lay with my back on the car seat, feet in the air and somehow have my head supported in the foot well? I think I am going to be in that position for awhile.

Do you have a sunroof? Maybe you can lay on the seat on your back with your head under the dash and your feet sticking up through the roof.

Take the whole seat right out and remove the brain and other items so nothing is crushed.
Try it in a coupe, thats even more fun....

at 39 i find it very difficult for more than a few minutes. it helps to do it with the car out of the garage so the doors can fully open. the seats come out easily to make more room. the driver side is a real pain to get under for long

you can also inspect behind the dash a bit, by going through the front trunk. remove the plastic trim piece (dont know what its called--right near or to the left of the brake fluid tank) from inside trunk and you can see wires, the back of the air circulation slider controls etc...at least on mine you can..though tough to squeeze your arm through there if you need to

With the seats out, as well as the steering wheel, I lie on my back on the floor and can work under there all day. I'm 68. However, working on the pedal cluster is another matter. I have yet to find a comfortable position for working on the pedals/cables, etc.

+ 1 on taking the seat out! I've done that in my 944 for years and now my 911 as well.

Try using a mirror..

in addition to all the above, i recommend that you use a couple of the heavy furniture moving pads to sorta even out the floor board and tunnel.

I asked my wife to do the same thing but she just shook her head and walked off!

This'd be the ideal pose...substitute the workshop manual for the paper.

Another approach is to roll the car over onto its roof. Then access is easier. But don't forget to drain the gas before you do this.
