Testing Fuel Accumulator?

I've got a 1980-83 CIS Fuel Accumulator with 2 fittings on top and 1 on the bottom. Don't have a vacuum pump.Tested it as follows. Both top fittings air can be freely blown through both of them with no resistance as well as sucked on with no resistance or vacuum. The bottom fitting. Air cannot be blown through and it holds vacuum when air is sucked through it. Is the accumlator good?

Adidas,

The fuel accumulators are easy to test. Like what you did, it would identify if the diaphragm is good or bad. Based from the info you have given, the FA has a good seal and diaphragm has no puncture. I would call it as a good unit.

Another good test is the liquid fill test. Fill the upper chamber (has 2 fittings) with liquid (gasoline) and observe very closely if the liquid would seep through the membrane by watching the bottom single port (fitting). Any sign of wetness would indicate a break in the diaphragm. Keep us posted.

My old/bad one I could blow air through it. The new one I could not. Sounds like yours is ok. Did It take awhile to start after sitting a just few minutes? Mine took about 3-4 seconds of cranking to start, now 1 second.

Plus it was leaking fuel out the bottom hole.

Bill, if you look at what it does..the accumulator softens the pump flow pulse. there is a in line , an out line to the filter and there is a return line to the tank. The early accumulators didnt have the return and if you had a bad diaphram the fuel would leak out the bottom, fire hazard.
if you blow into the top there should be air coming out the other connection but none out the bottom.

Mine is a three fitting FA. When I blow air into one of the top fittings while blocking the other and then release the air the bottom fitting will hold a vacuum.

Doesn't the return line go to the gas tank? If so given that the bottom fitting draws a vacuum shouldn't there be some residual gas in that line.

Not trying to nit pick here but replaced the FA last year when I had similar problems, turned out to be the check valve at the pump, and don't believe it could be the FA again.

I'm trying to understand this system but I can't find a diagram that shows the FA with the bottom fitting. Anyone have one?
