early 911
You guys really made my day. I'm so glad to see there is appreciation from the younger crowd for these cars. I am of the opinion that in cars and music, there was little created after the mid-seventies that is of much value.Porsche has become a victim of its own success and has evolved into something quite distant from its original concept. Like the 240 Z's and many other"landmark" autos, the Porsche has moved away from being a great sports car to being a full- fledged G.T. car. The early cars have an elegance of simplicity that is hard to find in todays cars.

I'd be nice if Porsche brought back their own "retro" model based upon early cars. Using mostly the same components to resupply the parts market. Improvements: zinced frames with plastic paint and crash protection bars, better weight distribution, hydraulic lifters, electronic ignition, more power, less gas, less emissions, same light weight gracefullness.

John,
I don't believe a retro early 911 would be anything close to the original. At least not with the government regulations it would need to meet. The motor would be all wires & electronics to meet fuel and emission reg's. The interior would need changes to meet crash standards. The exterior? Maybe they could capture the look. But it would lose its simplicity and its 'on the edge' feel and that's what its all about. Now maybe a small manufacturer could take actual early cars and parts and build essentially brand new pre-74 911's from the ground up (and bypass all the government crap)! It's been done with VW bugs, so why not?! Hmmmm ... I smell a business opportunity here: What would one be willing to pay for a brand new 1973 "911 RS"? You order the color, the options, etc. just like at a dealer. The car is built to your order. Now the car might have a reconditioned T chassis and components from 10 different cars, plus some remanufactured stuff, but it would be a near perfect replica of a 1973 RS. Sure, this has been done by individuals many times over. But I'm talking about taking it up to the next level where somebody is cranking out 3-4 of these things a week and having a full warranty, etc. Sort of like the replica Cobras. Unfortunately, I suspect the price on such a vehicle would be in the 6-figure range. ![]() Last edited by cegerer; 03-05-2002 at 02:53 PM.. |
