Painting the calipers

I want to paint my calipers as they are removed from the car as I am fitting new gaskets and so on.

They have some rust on the outside I I'm not able to sand them 100% rust free.

1. Can I use some primer with rust sealer, so I'm sure not to get bubbles in the paint later on?

2. What primer can be used?

3. What temperature must the primer, rust sealer and paint deal with?

Thanks for answers.

Get some "caliper paint" at the local store and go to town!! knock off the rust with a brush degrease and paint, no magic here. If it chips off (and it will) pull the wheels off and repeat. Them California types do it every time they wash there car.

Like previously stated, caliper paint is your best bet. I've also seen engine paint with very high heat ratings. I'm not sure about the rust sealing primer, as I don't know what type of heat rating it might have. If I were you, I'd just have the calipers powdercoated. It is a tougher finish, and looks great IMO. Here's a picture of mine...

I painted a set of Black Boxster calipers with red Duplicolor caliper paint from a local auto parts supplier.
Clean them well with alcohol and spray a few thin coats of zinc oxide primer so the caliper paint will adhere better.Let the coats of primer dry thouroughly before applying the caliper paint.

I tried it without the primer and had to clean the paint off and start over because the caliper paint didn't adhere properly, luckily i was doing one at a time ... lol

Cheers !

Good move... Red does shave a few milli seconds from the 0-60 time

JJ,

Some dude in Australia has managed to save a few milliseconds from his 0-60 time because that's where those red Boxster calipers are now ... lol
Cleaned and repainted them before i decided to go with 996TT brakes instead

Cheers !

If you are able to have the glass blasted and powder coated, that would be the best.

Just removed old "caliper paint" from a set of 993TT calipers. Was hard to remove the paint, but when done they looked like new ones.
I powder coated them at home with DYI kit from eastwood.

You can buy the Porsche caliper stickers on Ebay ... I bought a set of four when i redid the Boxster calipers, they were good quality and made with a heat resistant film.

By the way, that DIY powder coating looks pretty good !

Cheers !

Will the zinc primer handle the breaking temperature? Written on the box, maximum about 200 celcius degrees.

A friend of mine from a ways back had an Evo with factory red brembos that were peeling. All his research pointed to the duplicolor engine enamel and using the clear coat. I did it on my old 914 track car, and more recently on my Boxster. It's been several months, and they still look like when i first painted them.

Cleaned and degreased the calipers (did not remove them, just diconnected the bolts, and left the hose on, as I was doing pads and rotors). Using a small grinder with a 3M pad, hit any spots that needed extra attention. Sprayed the paint color, let dry, applied the decals, sprayed clear, let dry, reassembled. Not sure about salt or anything, but it has lasted through this past winter in Atlanta with no issues.

Definitely made my car faster though...

Totle, What temp does the eastwood powder bake at?? I was doing a set and talked to my regular paint / powder guy and we were afraid of damaging the o rings btw the caliper halves? Went with a 2 part epoxy, Pistons ect were removed.

Obviously yours look to have worked well, I am also assuming you had the pistons removed.

Regards

The powder bakes at 200 degrees Celsius (392 F). Baked them in a regular kitchen oven.

You have to remove piston and all seals/o-rings
Result is awesome

After grinding, sanding and washing the calipers, I painted the calipers with zinc primer. The zinc primer seemed to not stick very well, maybe it's not good at old paint. Anyway, then I let it dry 24 hours and painted the calipers with caliper paint 1 component using a brush. It seems that the paint is mixing and loosen up the zinc primer and the original paint below. It's a messy soup.

I'm going to a good paint shop tomorrow to get recommended primer and paint and are not giving up.

Remi,

I tried the "brush" paint and i had to strip the first caliper down because it never cured ...The brush treatment is not recommended for aluminium calipers ...
I think if you read the can carefully it will mention that.

The zinc primer will work with the spray type caliper paints. In my case i used the Duplicolor paint and it turned out well !
This is what they looked like, although i finished the insides a bit better !!!

Cheers !
Phil

Now, after sanding them down the second time, I painted them with Zinc-aluminium paint instead of the Zinc paint. I think the finish is good now, so I have decided to mount them as this, without calipper paint.
