Polishing Original Fuchs

Can someone tell me if using a polishing compound on original factory Fuchs wheels is ok? I seem to recall reading that the original wheels are coated with some protective coating that will abrade off if polished. I've had my car for about 26 years ('81 SC) and have never polished them and they still look like the day I bought the car except for the stain after I used some degreaser on them trying to remove some wheel weight adhesive residue . I want to try and polish out the stain, but don't want to remove any protective coating if there is one.

If they were stained, you likely have a clear coat on them. Have you tried Vaseline?

If that doesn't work, try sending them to Al Reed in Orange CA. He does wonders.
