What should I do?
This post is more about what i should do while the engine is out,,,,,but i guess i need to vent a bit...............
I bought this 1987 911 (it was listed here on the forums) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/610700-1987-porsche-911-carrera-3-2-coupe-g50-incredible-condition-18-900-a.html I was assured the car was mint, no issues, no leaks, no problems and stupid me I didn't push for a PPI (i should have known better, i've bought 6 911's in my lifetime and had an inspection on all of them) Even the description pegs the car as a great example. I even called local mechanic shops and they all had good things to say about this dealer. I even spoke to the mechanic who did the top end last year, really nice guy, seemed to know his stuff ANYWAYS....i get the car shipped to Canada, car leaks oil like crazy! Take it to my mechanic, turned out to be oil switch and oil cooler leaking where it meets the engine. He had to drop the engine to fix it...... Rear brakes were toast (dealer told me brakes were fine), sway bar broken and the list goes on,.....i can just imagine what my $$ bill will be Plus the leak was a not a new one, there was soo much oil accumulation by the oil cooler leak location I've tried to contact the dealer multiple times to discuss and he's just ignoring me, not returning any of my correspondence..... Anyways......now that I've vented, is there anything else i should do while the engine is out?? Thanks http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1309914824.jpg |
valve adjustment, replace plugs, check wires and hoses, new fan belt if needed. If any oil near the tensioner pipes replace those too. Its so much easier with the engine out.

If the car was not in the condition he described, then the "bad press" will keep future buyers away.
Yes, shame on you for not having a PPI but his response to your problems will speak towards his credibility in the Porsche community. |
Check fuel lines! I just replaced mine as the old/ original ones were so hard! Better safe than sorry on this one!
|
If it hasn't been done, replace the engine sound mat. Sooo much easier to do with the engine out.

Well, I remember seeing this car for sale, and also browsed their inventory...quite a few pcars for sale...you might include a link to this thread in an email to them requesting reimbursement for the TOTAL of all the work you are having done at the moment. I actually had bookmarked their site for the future as you never know when the urge might strike to buy another car. I have since DELETED that link. Maybe a little bad press might make them a little more considerate to your situation.

You might consider: crankcase breather gasket, T-stat o-ring, CHT, Speed and ref sensors if they weren't hit in the previous work Bob Farmer did.
And rather than an email as suggested above, I would start asking questions right on the thread carguy2 posted. |
Got my mechanic busy today, I even took the day off and he let me help him in his shop........it was awesome....although I often felt like i was useless :)) LOL....learnt a heck of a lot....again awesome
He had already changed some things but in the end changed were; oil switch thermo plugs sound mat valve adj crank seal oil cooler seals clean clutch (really rusty but in excellent condition) checked fuel lines...all good and finally i cleaned the engine, she looks new now. Re-assembled everything and car feels & drives like new, just got home now Of course still no response from the dealer....i'm scanning my invoice and emailing to him to see what he says.... |
Check your air filter housing, there are 2 hoses that mount off the back half of your housing, over time the weight of the hoses crack your filter housing letting your baby suck unfiltered air.l found mine by accident/luck.It's easy enough to check just remove top half of air filter housing and air filter, shine a torch in there and you'll see where the hoses mount to the housing, the cracks will run from this area.

For future reference you might ask your mechanic what bearing update was done on the clutch fork shaft. Needle bearings or not. Not is better.
Should have a pretty solid car now. Enjoy it. Yeah, I probably wouldn't have gotten past the Wheelz. |
I almost purchased that car. By the time I called it was gone. The write up was so good, I to probably would not have had a PPI as well. I did purchase an 88 that came with some problems, however the dealer made them right. Hope it all works out for you.

The seller posted another car in the "cars for sale" forum today. Scan the bill from your wrench and post it on that thread, might provide some motivation for him to make it right.

After reading this thread, I guess I won't going for the "Entry Level" Porsche any time soon. :)
