Metalic "slap" noise rolling to a stop
82 sc
Twice today while rolling to a stop probably at around 15mph car out of gear I got a loud metallic "slap" from the right rear fender well. Loud too, sounds like driving over a loose manhole cover. Removed the right rear wheel and cant see anything out of the ordinary. Any suggestions guys? ( car did not jerk or stumble, cant hear or feel any bearing issues brakes all seem good. Maybe something in the park brake system? A bushing somewhere? happened on a nice flat surface so no real suspension travel happening at the time...very very concerned ) |
Did you check all of your CV joint bolts?
Also, from other threads where people have heard 'noises' from their car, oftentimes the noise has ended up actually coming from somewhere other than where they thought - eg, they heard back right but it was actually front right, etc. Might be worthwhile pulling the front wheel as well. You're probably not keen to drive it again - but is it repeatable? If so maybe you can get someone to hang their head out the window and see if they can hear it a bit better. Top of the head ideas - hope it's nothing serious. Al |
Check all your CV's, lug nuts, sway bar mounts, and shock mounts.

Check your front torsion bar mounts / suspension pan for rust. Stab the metal around the mount with an old screw driver to make sure its still stiff.

sounds like one of your wheel weights has become partially unglued and is slapping the caliper - only at lower speeds where the lack of centrifical force lets it dangle

Loose caliper / pads? When you apply the brake, it rotates / shifts until it hits a stop. That's my guess.
