Rhd 2.2s

Hi all,

I'm currently in the midst of purchasing a RHD 1971 911 S.
This is my first S so it's a whole new learning curve. A lot of the car is dissembled at the moment and it needs a little work, but importantly it's solid and it's complete, even down to small items which normally disappear over the years. I will hopefully have some pics which I can post soon. The interior is in good condition and comes with factory Recaros and the original colour is called Signal Orange (spelling?). Does anyone else have this colour ?

Over the next few months I will probably be asking lots of questions and seeking lots of help and advice, esp from early S owners. But for now, could anyone tell me how many S’s both R&LHD were made in 1971.

My car numbers are
Ch No 9111300024
Engine No 6310085
It's a UK car reg YOA 884J

If anyone has any info about this car or about 1971 S's it would be great to hear from you.

Also what finish should the deck lid badges be in? At the moment the PORSCHE lettering is chrome and the 911S badge is black. Does this sound correct?

Finally I've attached a pic of the front ID plate. Just behind it is another small plate with the number "BS AU 48". I never had this plate on any other porsche. Any ideas

Thanks in advance for any help and advice

Actualy it was made in 1970 as is only the 24th S for the 1971 modelyear which started in august 1970. My S targa was originaly delivered in 0ctober 1970 and its serial is 9111310124.

Mine was also signal orange, actually quite like an ..orange.

You can find additional info at: http://early911sregistry.org

In my opinion both badges should be gold. In case you interested I have a new set of gold PORSCHE letters laying around which I payed 50 euros for, you can have them for 25.

Good luck with your new purchase!

2.2 S

Thanks for the information Peter.
So mine is a 1971 model but made 1970. Does anyone know how many RHD 71 S's were made in that year?

Also can anyone confirm that the lid badges should be gold. If the chrome ones are not original I will certainly buy them from you.

Cheers

Excellent, if I'd had the choice I would have gone for an orange car. It's so.....1970's....! Had to make do with white although I still love it. When you eventually buy it, I'd love to see it. Bournemouth's about an hour down the road from me (by normal car, half that for the 911).

Just going through the trauma of thinking I may have to sell my '72 2.4E. We need an extension to the house, and I can't see where else the money will be coming from. Any sympathy will be gratefully received!

Oh, and I forgot to say that this month's Porsche Post has a list of all the pre-'73 numbers of cars built, and types.

I have a silver 1970 911S and my lettering is gold, I'm not sure if that is due to it being silver or if that was the case for all of the 911S

Congratulations on your new purchase.

We have a yellow 71 S Targa. The decklid lettering on our is also gold.

I ordered the cardex (statement of S authenticity and it shows the original options/colour etc for the car) from Porsche Cars North America. Not sure if you can get that for the UK though.

The Early 911S registry is very helpful.

I'm not much help with the short hood 911's, and I'm of no value to the long hood society. But I just wanted to say congrats, on your new pride and joy! SmileWavy

Alan - congratulations on your purchase!

According to Peter Morgan's "Original Porsche 911" there were 1430 911S coupes produced worldwide for the 1971 model year (with a further 788 911S Targas). The breakdown of LHD vs RHD numbers for any specific model seems to be much more difficult to obtain but according to the last records I got from the PCGB's Early 911 Register there were 44 RHD 911S models officially imported to the UK in 1971 with currently only 8 '71 S models (LHD & RHD) on the register.

It would be worth contacting Richard Cole (01737 642728 H) the Early 911 Register archivist to see if he knows of the car or any of the car's previous owners.

I also think that the insignia on the engine lid should be gold - this eventually fades/wears through making the letters appear silver/chrome, so it may just be that yours are original but 'worn'.

Thanks all for your kind words.

I'm really looking forward to starting work on the S and getting it back on the road. It looks like the lettering should be gold, so if anyone has a gold 911S emblem then please get in contact. I therefore have a black emblem for sale in case anyone is interested.

Also thanks Andy for the numbers I will call Richard soon. As soon as i get some more snaps I will post them for all to see.

Very excited
