Question 89 Cab top Jams while opening

The top on my 89 cab unlatches and opens about 8 inches and then sounds like mechanical binding on the right side and stops. It closes fine. If anyone has some experience here I would appreciate it. Thanks

I have similar symptoms. There are two rear motors, perhaps one of your motors is bad, or the transmission that the motor is driving is stuck on one side. After searching this board and talking to others, I have determined that this is a fairly common problem. You do have the option of reverting to manual operation, which is what I have done. By loosening the nut on each side that is behind the small round plastic cap near your rear speakers, you can disengage the transmission from the arm. Then you use the motors to unlatch, and open the cab top manually. When its time to close it, you manually close the top and the guide pins will drop into the holes on the windshield, then use the switch again to close it.

Another option you may try is to loosen the bolt only on the side that is binding, and let the one motor and transmission arm do all the work. If you try this, be sure to guide it with your hand as it closes. Good luck - and post your progress.

993 convetible top closure problem

I found this useful, but ultimately you may find that the transmission is bad, and these steps won't help that.

I had a similar issue with my 89 unfortunately the motor did not stop and the main bow on the drivers snapped. I have since removed the motor arms and just use the electric latches.

Thanks for the responses! I will start opening things up in the back and try to diagnose. If any one know of a manual with diagnostic procedures, I would like to get a copy. I have looked at some of the other posts.

I thought this one was pretty well-written:

Re-aligning the 993 convertible top
