Fuel Tank reconditioning help
Any recommendations on a shop that will clean, recondition if necessary and test a steel fuel tank in the greater Los Angeles area. It's for an early 911. Thanks in advance.

Check with TRE. I'm sure they have someone they can recommend.
If not, this company seems to do GREAT work: Moyer Fuel Tank Renu - antique gas tank repair restoration, classic car gas tanks GASTANK. Unfortunately, not local. HTH.

Here's what I did on my gas tank that had set for 4 yrs. Unbelievable varnish and rust. I live in Indiana so my shop wouldn't help So-cal guys BUT. I took my tank to a radiator shop to have it "boiled out." The tech said it was too bad but he could cut a large hole in the top of main section an another in the hump in the spare tire area. He would then bead blast the interior, clean it out and re-weld the pieces back in place. They then seal the inside with something (it was red) and when it dries they pressure test it for leaks. The quality of the work was very nice and while you can see where it was welded I could have dabbed some undercoat on the top and probably hidden the whole job. Didn't want to.
The tech guy said if I was not in a hurry and let him use it as fill in work when he wasn't busy he would do it for $200. It being January I was in no hurry anyway. At the time our host was having trouble getting new tanks so this worked out great. Percifields Radiator Shop in Columbus did the work so anyone in central Indiana might be able to use this info. I've done business with them for 45 years and always been happy with the results. |
