Post 901 Tranny Rebuild/Gasket Question

Jim has inspired me to quit procrastinating and just do it...rebuild my ailing tranny that is. First the problems I was having...shifting into first at anything more than a crawl, occasional difficulty engaging first when stopped, and shifting into second quickly or after reving it out in first gear.

Where I am at now. I have the tranny in parts. I have verified that the 2-3 slider is worn on the 2 side where it contacts the syncro ring, the 3 side is fine or at least noticably better. I did this by placing 2nd gear on my table saw bed then placing the 2-3 slider 3rd gear side in contact with but not slid over the syncro and using a square to measure the distance from table top to the top of the slider. Flipped the slider over so the 2nd gear side is now in contact with the syncro everything else the same and there is a very noticable gap between the slider and square. Makes sense since 2nd was a problem and 3rd was fine. No brainer replace 2-3 slider. The 1-Reverse slider teeth are totally rounded, again a no brainer to replace. What puzzles me is that the dog teeth on 1 & 2 are only very slightly rounded. I expected with the 1 slider being so damaged to find the 1 dog teeth trashed also. Could it be that someone replaced syncro and dog teeth and skipped the sliders due to cost

I will be replacing the R-1 slider, 2-3 slider, syncros, and 1-2 dog teeth.

I have read in previous post about replacing the paper gaskets for a $1 or so. I am wondering where to get these gaskets as all I have found is gasket sets for ~$30.

Any advice/recommendations appreciated

There was a reply from John Walker but it disappeared

Another question, exactly how do you measure the intermediate gasket thickness to avoid upseting the ring/pinion?

Also, does anyone near Sacramento have the shift adjustment jig I could rent?

Looks like you may have double posted the original. Here is the 'other' post with JW's comments.
