running hot?
My 73 911 T is at 6100 feet in western Colorado. The temps around here lately have been in the low to mid 90's. On fairly flat terrain, the engine temp is about 210 or a little less. I have an elevation change from 4900' to 6100' in the eleven mile run from the town I frequently visit to my home. Today, the engine temp went up to close to 230. Is this an unusually high temp? What is normal? My mechanic says probably no big deal, but what is your experience?
Thanks, gary |

230 is about the upper limit for what I'd want my engine oil temperature to be. I live in the desert, so I added a front fender mounted carrera cooler with a fan. Even with my air conditioning running on a 105 degree day, my oil temp stays at around 125.

I recently asked the very knowledgeable person who maintains my cars this very question. He stated that 225 is probably the upper limit for safe oil temperature - anything above that is getting pretty hot. I would say that an occasional visit into the 230 territory is probably OK, but I would avoid regular sustained runs at that temp or higher.

This is not possible!!!!!

125°F oil temperature is COLD and not even close to the operation temperature designed for air cooled 911 cars. Are you sure you got your number correct? Auxiliary thermostat operates around 186°F (+/-) a few degree. The moment you start your motor it will warm-up slowly to operating temperature. A cold engine is under 113°F when a TTS (thermotime switch) is needed. Keep us posted. Tony |
