got some goods news and some bad news...
Hello all.
As I have posted a few weeks ago starting my 2.7 for the first time was very exciting. After running it about 15 minutes total now, I started to notice a rattle from the chainbox (RHS) area. The tensioners were freshly rebuilt and bled. I had the old muffler off the other night to replace with a new one that I purchased. While the muffler was off, I sat there looking at how convenient it would be to remove the chainbox covers and have a peek. So I did just that, and low and behold, the darn tensioner had collapsed down to the clamped on "guard" that I put on there for a little insurance. Hence the small rattle that I thougt I heard. I thought, well I will order a new tensioner ($150). Then I thought, might as well order two (paranoid inner-mind speaking), now up to about $300. THEN, I happen to stumble across a guy selling oil-fed tensioner kits new in the box. Now for a little more money, I will have the real thing. Now I patiently await Mr. UPS man to deliver my piece of mind. My question is, Do I have to remove those two studs on the upper left hand side chainbox? The pictures of the tech article on installation on this upgrade shows the left side cover requiring longer studs in place of those two located in the upper part of the chain housing. BTW,my car is a 1974 and never had a smog pump. Sorry I rambled, just curious if I need to order anything else. Chris |

I think there is a minor modification that needs to be made to the early cars. Something about a stud that is too small or something. You replace it with a bigger one (my hazy recollection). I believe there is an alternative solution that is even easier.
Congratulations on your Carrera tensioner aquisition. Peace of mind. Oops. Maybe I got it backwards. Perhaps your stud is too big (maybe a nice problem to have) and the hole in the new chain housing cover is too small. So you put in a smaller stud or drill out the cover.

Yes, you need to remove those two studs and replace them with longer versions. The easiest way is to cut off the head of a DIN 8.8 M6 bolt threaded full length, and dress the cut end with a file. I don't remember the length needed, but it will be obvious after you have one of the old studs out ... the additional length is the difference in depth between the two heavier bosses and the rest of the 'regular' M6 bosses. Use red Loctite 271 or 272 thread locker compound on the new studs after cleaning the bore with brake/degreaser spray.
You are replacing all six chain ramps with the five black and one brown ramp, righr?

Chris, When we updated the tensioners in my son's '73 we added these two longer studs. They are BM6 x 42 (6mm x 42 mm long) Porsche Part No.: 900.061.092.02 if you want to order them.
I wouldn't recommend the tempting short cut of using screws with heads as you will work the soft threads in the aluminum or magnesium chain case every time you remove the covers. If you use a screw follow Warren's advice and make it into stud and loctitie it in. Received the check and put it in my Porsche fund. Thanks. Cheers, Jim

Perhaps this guy is selling some parachutes, or even some discount condoms! Somethings I would be careful of buying off of 'some guy.' With the history of these tensioners, I would include them on that list... -Wayne
