TriadWest performance muffler for SSI db test done - anything quieter?
 

I just installed a new TriadWest muffler supposedly 90 db version, I mated to my SSIs last night and I must say it is pretty buzzy inside the car from 2000 to 3000 rpm inside the car. The buzz is a constant 120 hz hummy/buzzy note which gets up to around 102 dbC inside the car when I put any load on the engine, whether I am driving at 20 mph, or 60 mph. It is annoying to me for everyday driving, as constant cruising at 60 mph has this constant 100 db note. Above 4000 rpm though, the resonance is gone, and the car sounds much like a stock exhaust. Probably best for racing, since its fairly quiet up there. Still, it is not half as loud as the FVD dual out sport muffler I tried a few years ago. That sucker was LOUD!

Anyways, here are my db level tests done at both a A and C weighting. These are done at a standstill and without any load on the engine. Driving and placing any load on the motor brings out the one note buzz. Note that C is louder primarily because of the peaked one note tone at 100-120 hz.

I need to find another muffler soon that is not so loud - 102 db constantly in my car will drive me deaf and annoy the heck out of my girlfriends. Is a Dansk sport or GHL any better? If this is what I have to put up with, I will put the stock exhaust back on. I need your help guys!

This is the exact reason I haven't pulled myself togheter and bought a SSI style exhaust yet. I'm so afraid of resonance or constant droning/buzzing at certain rpms.

I think Joeaksa is lucky enough to have a resonance free SSI setup, but I don't know which muffler he uses? Maybe you could get one of those? Sorry for not being of any help.

i'm posting sounds of the dansk dual out very soon, its a 1 in though. i don't have ssi's. and i have a premuffler, and its still loud, but not too much - i love it.

i may be quite a bit noisier with ssi's.

if you don't have to have dual out, the single out sport dansk would probably be ideal.

Mikkel, it seems Joeaska is using the stock box 73 muffler and he is happy with it. However a sport modified version of that muffler releases like 10 hp, sort of defeating the whole purpose of the SSIs. Still though, I may consider it. Anyone have stock dual in single out banana muffler for sale?

no not at all. its like you said loud at low revs - but NICE loud!! and with increased revs it doesn't get louder.

very nice to drive with. i have the windows down most of the time. if you close them you can bearly hear it.

I had a SSI (1974 heat exchanger) + Bursch 2 in 1 out...and it was okay...it was a low hum sound...and at high RPM's again a very low bass hum...

now I have a dansk 2 in 2 out and it is a lot more like a V-8...still bassy and low, but it has more burrbles and noises...

I like the Dask noise...not too great to stimulate conversation in the car...a stock 1 in 1 out sounded too quiet for me...but the dansk is a TAD too loud as well...but I can live with it...but you will set off car alarms in most parking garages...

I must admit though when I hear a stock SC go by I miss all the mechanicall whirring and clicking my car made that is now masked by the exhaust...

82sc i bet that sounds like mine but more decibels.....

thats why i thought the 1 in/1out sport muffler might be the way to go. i figured it would sound like 82sc just described but not quite so loud.

i doubt mine would set off car alarms..:D

For our 87 track car with SSI's we are having a local muffler shop fabicate a custom exhaust using a Flowmaster 80 dual in, dual out

With the Dansk 2 in 2 out, is there any of that deep hummy-buzz note when you are driving? When you say the noise is not too great to stimulate conversation, are you saying its not too loud to stimulate complaints, or its too loud so you can't have a conversation?

89911, any idea what that Flowmaster sounds like yet? It sounds like it's a work in progress. The sound bytes of GM V8s on their website sound pretty healthy though.

I can have conversations with my friends and people I know...first time date...it is hard to talk over the noise...

and most of my passengers hate it...
I personally don't care what they think...hahaha

but it is loud...but I have heard it is one of the most quiet aftermarkets...

if you want a small increase in noise...look into having a 2nd pipe put on your stock unit...Dansk will be a big increase in noise...

find some one locally...you can listien to it...

when I went to No Hollywood speedo a guy came out of the shop to see if it was a V-8 transplant...

GHL, no resonance. They can build you a quite or loud muffler can. And like I have said before, their customer service and warranty are super.

I figure the custom made Flowmaster will cost about $300 installed with stainless pipes. As far as the sound, hard to say, but at about 1/3 the price of the GHL muffler, I'm willing to gamble with it. Beside's this is a track car with no interior or sound deadening so anything will be loud. I'll post more as the process develops.

Guys, I had a ride in a euro 84 3.2 cab with SSIs and a Monty 2 in, single out muffler today and I think I have found my muffler. In fact I ordered it today, awaiting delivery Monday. The sound is not overly loud, without any buzzing, resonance, or droning. The best way for me to characterize it would be that's it's a few dbs louder than a stock '74 muffler, similar in overall character, yet sounds less congested, with some deep grunt. The details, overtones, and pops in a stock exhaust during acceleration and deceleration are just more clarified and it sounds real nice. This is important to me as I don't want to go deaf, and I have thousands invested in my sound system. I considered the Dansk sport too, but the guys at Performance Products, one who has a SC with SSIs and a Dansk, rode in my car with the Triad exhaust thought it was actually quieter than the Dansk. But, I never heard it. SSI is tooling up for a new muffler they have developed, called the Laguna, for its 92 db limit, but I can't wait 1 to 2 years for it. It's supposed to be fairly quiet, with hp maximized by testing different muffler designs on their in house dyno over the years. I'll keep you all posted when I get the muffler installed on my car and make some db measurements for you all to reference to, maybe even a sound clip.

Many owners who have installed 2-out mufflers complain about excessive sound. The 1in-1out GHL on the Blue Bomber makes me smile everytime I drive.
No resonance or complaints from co-pilot Mrs. Z, either.

(I *do* like the "industrial" look of that Triad muffler though.)

I've got an '88 with a Weltmeister chip, a cat bypass pipe and an otherwise stock exhaust system. I've been searching for a replacement muffler that will produce lower restriction with only a minimal increase in sound volume over the stock muffler. I assume I will end up with a 1 in / 1 out, but can anyone recommend a particular brand? All the recommendations I have found that seem to fit the bill are for SC's and such ...

Guys, in the interm, while I am waiting for the Monty muffler next week, I took off the Triad muffler and installed the Triad muffer with a catalytic converter and was actually surprised it was not too loud. I could actually hear all the engine noises instead of the exhaust. It was pretty grunty though, and the cat works because the exhaust smells clean. It has a sort of wierd one note tone to it though. But it wasn't designed to used as a sport muffler anyways, just to pass smog.

Does the Monty muffler have a name? Do you know if the company has a website?

Monty is supposed to have a website based in Australia. That web address is www.monte.com.au but the site does not seem to work. Where I got my information from is from Aase Sales, the distributor based in the US, Southern Calfornia to be exact. Their web site is www.**************. The muffler I purchased and most people would want is called the M21 because it has the dual inlets for the SSIs, and the exhaust outlet mounted lower to clear the post '74 impact bumpers. Its a single out 3" tip but they also have a dual 3" out, a single 4" out, and a dual 4" out. I think the 4" out is a bit ridiculous. The welds and workmanship on the Monty are every much as much a work of art as the SSIs are, and they are fully stainless. You can just feel the muffler is built tight. It sells for $716.00.

This is unlike the Dansk mufflers, which while all stainless on the outside, are all baffled with plain steel on the inside. So when the muffler starts to rust, guess what starts to go first.

Nice products, and sweet fabrication standards.

Does anyone know if Mille Miglia are still producing mufflers? They have a rep for the same kind of quality, but have a deeper/smoother tone than Montys, a perhaps a tad quieter.

And another question for the Dansk experts.......
Does anyone know if the Dansk stamped with a 930.111.043.00S part number is the OEM replacement or their sports model?
I'm guessing the OEM model would be very little different from the stock muffler in tone & volume. Is this right?
