death rattle

Well I have read all the posts that I could find in the archives on this. I have a slight rattle at low rpms when engine is cold. I have an 86 carrera. Supposedly with the carrera chain tensioners. None of the posts I read were of carreras with tensioner failure or the like. I am about ready to open this thing up but this is a big project for me on this car. I have worked on my other vehicles but not much on this one. I don't want to get over my head with this thing but I can't really afford to go to the shop with this thing either. Any and all advice would be appreciated.
I have to say that most of what I know about this car , I learned here. thanks in advance

Unlike women, a race car is an inanimate object. Therefore it must, eventually, respond to reason.

Probably a broken chain ramp. Pull the muffler and chain covers and have a look.

I certainly don't mean to insult your intelligence but are you sure the rattle is not in the transaxle? Carreras (G-50 trans before the "dual mass" flywheel) are notorious for drive train noise. On my car it is more noticeable when the motor is cold at idle.

Easy way to tell - if noise goes away when you depress the clutch, it's the gearbox and nothing to worry about.
