Timing Light
Please excuse me because this is not a 911 related post but most probably the 911 community will have the best answer.
Is it possible to use a 12v timing light on a 6v 356 engine this way ? I plan to use an external 12v battery to power the timing light while testing a 356 engine that has a 6v electrical system. I think that the 12 v will power the light and it will not have any effect on the inductive pick up. Is it safe to do this or there is a possibility that I will break or burn something ? |

using an external 12v battery to power the timing light is perfectly fine. the inductive pickup goes on the #1 plug wire and is not connected to the vehicle's electrical system.

donporfi, if you have a problem with the timing light, turn the engine to top dead center, make sure the TDC mark is centered on the center of the engine case, (rotor is pointed to mark on distributor) turn the distributor (ignition on) counter clockwise a bit and then turn it slowly clockwise until you hear it click, points open up and that is your static timing mark for the 356 1600N motor. I have not owned the 356B for 32 or 33 years so my memory may be a bit off. Good luck. Steve
