Porsche Crest For Sale: Wayne's 1977 911S Red Targa

For Sale: 1977 911S Targa

Well, sad to say that things change a bit, and it seems like this project isn't going to get done after all. I originally bought this car for my wife, but after talking to quite a few people (including her), I think I might have been trying to convince myself that I bought the car for her to drive, when in fact, she probably would not want to drive a 911 everyday. I'm new to this marriage thing, but I figured that I might have been pushing it on her. I know she wants a 356 Speedster (maybe in five years), or a BMW convertible. I think that she would settle for a 911 cab.

I normally don't allow classifieds ads in this area of the board, but since I'm the moderator, I'll allow myself to break the rules this once.

Anyways, so since I already have a 911SC, (and a 356, and a 944, and a 914-6, and my truck), I figured that it isn't really worth the effort for me to work on this one at this time. I hate to see it go (looking at it outside my window right now), but I think that if I hang onto it, it will be neglected. I'd rather someone else take it, and restore it back to its glory.

Speaking of glory, it's really a very good car. The interior is in excellent condition, I'd say about an 8 out of ten. Perfect dash pad (rare), and no rips in the seats. The carpet is a bit faded (could use a new carpet kit), and there is a tear in the lower A/C console unit under the dash. Considering that the A/C is disabled (compressore and one of the lines removed), I was going to remove this from underneath the dash anyways. It needs a new window crank too. Other than that the interior is in really, really good condition - one of the things that led me to buy this car to begin with.

The targa top is also in primo condition. The photo shows some normal discoloration from dirt on the roof, but that should come off with some rubber protectant like amour-all. The roof seals are good, and basically nothing needs to be done to the roof, except to reglue a piece of the headliner. The seals on the car are good. The side bar seals have the cloth parts coming off, but the rubber is still pretty good. The targa window seal shows a little bit of dryness around its edges. Other than that, the seals look pretty good. No cracks in the glass around the car.

The car has SC-sized calipers, and power brakes, and stops on a dime (just like my 911SC). The car also has the original Fuchs Alloys, which look pretty good in their stock condition (paint and polish for a great look).

The engine leaks oil, and smokes. Also has a compression leak in one of the cylinders. No getting around it here, this engine needs a typical 2.7 rebuild. The car starts up fine (no problems with the CIS injection), but has a hissing noise on one of the cylinders. This is most likely caused by a pulled head stud, which is typical of these motors. The clutch works fine, but seems a little stiff (probably needs new helper spring). It's a 911S engine, I believe to have matching numbers.

The car has all of its original smog equipment - nothing is missing. Once rebuilt, the engine should pass smog pretty easily. I'm quite sure that it will not pass smog at this moment in time.

The title is clean, and has been transferred into my name (the DMV is mailing me the title). The registration is set to NON-OP, and there are no liens or fees from the DMV on this vehicle.

The outer body is in need of a paint job. The car is originally orange-red (not guards red), and the sun has faded it quite a bit. The base of the paint is good, except for one odd spot in the rear where the paint has flaked off of the metal. The front valance got tweaked when we unloaded off of the trailer , but it should be able to be formed back into shape. The car has not been in an accident (as far as my inspection can tell), and there is very little body work (just a few door-dings here and there) that would need to be done.

This car is a complete, running car, and is not missing anything. Here is my list of parts to be added / tasks that need to be done to the car before it can be taken to a PCA event:

- Replace window crank
- Glue cloth on side seal
- Rebuild Engine / replace helper spring
- Paint Car
- Replace tow hooks on front suspension
- Remove A/C console from under dash

There really isn't too much to be done to this car, that's why I thought that it would make a good match for my wife. I am writing a book on 911 Engine Rebuilding so I thought that I would just rebuild this engine and my 914-6 2.7 at the same time. Turns out, that I just don't think that I have that amount of time.

I traded some cash plus a bunch of parts for this car. It's unfortunate, but because of the 2.7L motors, you can purchase this entire car for about the same price of a good used 1978 911SC motor. In fact, this car would be an excellent candidate for a 3.0 or 3.2 because it's so clean.

So anyway, I would like to offer the car at $4450 or best offer. Keep in mind that this is a very solid, clean car, and I will not sell it to anyone who will be parting it out (the parts are probably worth at least $6K if you parted it out). You must promise that you will restore and drive this car, and not part it out. I will also give a 10% discount off of all parts in our catalog for one year to the purchaser of this car.

Ok, here are some photos:

Wayne...amazing how that disposable income gets disposed of in a different way once ya get married! I'm sure the folks on this post are impressed by your honesty in detailing every nuance of the car for sale...Not your average E-bay poster ad. Good luck. And if I haven't said it before ...congrats on your marriage.

Not to mention the expenses when you have kids. Well... I'm probably a squad leader as I've six (right...6) kids.

Still, Porsche is much better family car than a Vette with no back seats...
