shimming the pressure plate

Has anyone had to shim a pressure plate away from the flywheel due to a slightly thick aftermarket clutch disc? I was told that this is common and that .0025-.0050 shims maybe necessary depending on variation of discs. Is this true?

My clutch will not release (930 factory sachs PP.... aftermarket kevlar disc).

I can't wait to pull the engine again (for the bazillionth time) just to play with shims. argh!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for any help

Hello

I never heard that you have to shim the pressureplate.

However I once had to deal with a similar problem and it was also a Sachsclutch.

The clutch wouldn´t releas full but everytning was new and in specs. Finally the pressurplate wasn´t machined fully inside the case and didn´t releas the full way ( stoping to soon ).
The missing travel was 0,5 mm.

To check that you need a hydraulic press and the press untill the clutch releases ( Thats tricky to dind out. I used a big bering to turn the flywheel and the clutch was fixed to the hydraulic stamp. needed some hours to fabricate that ). Then messure back on the trany if you have enough way.
You will see if the pressurplate will not releas full way and then just shim the unit between the flywheel and the pressureplate ( I used 0,10 mm adjusterblades from the roll ) untill it works.

Then send it back to the saler with your compliant.

Grüsse

Roland.......thank you for your reply. The embarassing bonehead move (that I saw as soon as I pulled the trans off) was (that in a rush) I had put the starter ring gear on backwards not letting the pressure plate move away from the disc because the hole was blocked. the X is where it lines up backwards ........oops
It is going back together now and seems fine so far (will run it this weekend).
thanks again
