Touchup paint nightmare....help!
Hello all,
well, I was getting all stoked on the spray touchup job I was doing. Nice coverage, nice blend. Then it happened! A couple small sections started to bubble/crinkle as if having a chemical reaction of some sort. When the paint dried I went to sand it and I got little paint balls and the new and original paint came off in a slick mess down to the metal. What color is the factory primer? It looks like I have both factory (whitish) and other (grey) primer under the paint. Surface was well-prepped and clean. Any ideas why this happened? thanks much -Brad 80SC |

Brad,
Although it hasn't ever happened to me ... that sounds like a 'classic' case of applying laquer over enamel paint, and your car was painted with acrylic enamel at the factory! Was the touchup spray paint you applied a Porsche or VW-branded can?

Whoops, this was in the wrong place......
Hmmm, the ACRYLIC grey primer I just used to cover the bare metal is doing the same thing to the surrounding paint. -Brad |

Brad,
Porsche used to sell touchup spray cans back in the '70s, but I don't believe it is available now. I have never seen any primer in spray cans from Porsche or VW! You have to be VERY CAREFUL when using the term acrylic about automotive paints ... as it is used as an adjective for BOTH laquer and enamel paints! And the two types of paint can be quite disasterous when applied improperly ... enamel can go over laquer, but NOT the other way around! It sounds as if the paint supplier mixed you some laquer primer and topcoat cans! You may want to go back and discuss the matter with yoour paint supplier. If your SC paint is original, it is ENAMEL! And, your paint supplier should have already been aware of that, but misinformation about Porsche paint is abundant ... The exact terminology that Porsche uses in the service manual for all of the paint used from the January '56 thru the '83 SC production (which is as 'late' as my service manuals cover) ... is 'synthetic resin paints' and 'sythetic enamel paint.'

Here is a link to a very active BBS paint site. I have learned a ton on painting and surface prep. I am sure they can tell you more.
