Help!

I am adjusting my valves for the first time. I am having trouble figuring what is the TDC. On the crank shaft at near TDC, there is two lines. The Z letter is in between the two line and the number 1 is on the right of the two mark. Which line is the TDC? The car is a 72 T. Also, when romoving the valve cover, three of the studs came loose. Do I use some kind of engine locite to keep it screwed in? I appreciate any advice.

TDC is the line "between" the Z and 1.
The line to left is 5 deg ATDC.

Go to tech articles and search under "Distributor Lube" and look for the article posted by Warren AKA "Early_S Man". It has a graphic of the crank pulley with the markings.

Yes you can use locktite (red, if I remember correctly) to reinstall the studs.

I assume you've read the "valve adjustment" article or have 101 Project book, they are essential.

Does your car have MFI or CIS? Good luck...

I'm having a similar problem with the crank pulley markings on my 75s

For this pulley, is the Z1 mark the one in between the Z and the 1 on the pulley, and the mark to the left is 5deg after TDC. I know these markings are hard to read.
This picture shows the FE marks.

What does the FE mean?
Lastly, does anyone know what these marks are?

Thanks so much!

When I did mine, on an 81 SC, not only did it have to be on the Z1 mark, but the rotor under the distributor cap had to be pointing to the little notch on the edge of the distributor. If you find yourself on the Z1 but not on the notch, you have to go around again to the Z1 mark.

The other mark signifies 5 degrees before top dead center and is used to set the timing at idle.

The FE is used for setting up the mechanical FI.

red - check out this thread, I asked a similar question about my 76, which has different timing marks than an SC and than the illustrations in the 101 projects book. WalterMiddie helped out with the illustrations in the thread

Ignition timing question

Thanks so much for pointing my to this! It clears everything up now. I was getting frustrated because, like you said, the 101 projects book is different. I'm just wondering why a 75 with CIS would still have a crank pulley referencing mfi???

Thanks again

I'm pretty sure, if it's a 72 T, then it's MFI. The 73.5 T cars have the, "much sought after & superior", Crime Scene Investigation......err, I mean, CIS.

Yeah, I know about when MFI was used, etc etc... I was just wondering why my CIS car would have a mark referencing MFI on the crank pulley. Seems weird.
