Same as gearbox type; 901 and 915 respectively ('72-'86).

Typically, the numbers on the bottom of the gearbox, along the casing seam. 901/XX, 915/XX. Compare your numbers with published tables in the various spec books.

The 915 has a slightly longer nose section than a 901, and when fitted into an earlier chassis (65-71), the sheet metal must be bumped out in various locations to clear.

Actually, I have a 915 with the old type of shifter... Maybe because it's a 4sp ?

The old style shifter is also used on the '72 with a 915 gearbox. Suggest upgrading to the 915 shifter. It's better, even with a 4-speed. My 911 originally came with a 4-speed ('69 w/901), but I've never run across a 915 4-speed.

Mine was built in oct 73...
Or that or was changed later, but it's definitely a 915 4sp. For the US only the 5sp was sent, I think.
So if i can change to the later style shifter will i notice an improvement ?

Best to drive a 911 with a 915 shifter and decide for yourself. YMMV.

There' s a simpler way to find out. The 901 has 1st on left and down, 915 has it on left and up. Right ?
